Paperclip to the rescue; introducing the Digital Welcome Pack

Good afternoon to all our readers, followers and marketplace users. We hope you're all keeping well and staying safe during these difficult times.

With the current uncertainty surrounding the resumption of teaching at HE institutions in the UK, a number of universities are moving towards distance learning for the next semester. Other unis have already committed to delivering the entire 2020/21 academic year online. With this in mind, the chances of Fresher's Fairs running at full capacity (if at all), are pretty slim.

Saving Freshers' 2020

It's no secret that Fresher's Fairs are notoriously busy and chaotic events; with dozens of societies, clubs and promoters eager to impress on the biggest day on the Students' Union calendar. Sadly, running such events is just not compatible with the current social distancing guidelines.

Fear not, however, as the team at HQ have come up with a plan to make sure students starting uni in September wont miss out on the deals, discounts and freebies they have come to expect from their Freshers' Fair.

The team have spent the last month putting together a free Digital Welcome Pack for all students in the UK...

So, what's inside?

After weeks of shortlisting and contacting different brands popular with students, we settled on 30x deals, discounts and freebies to distribute. Students will be able enjoy a free six month trial of Amazon Prime as well as tasty discount on their takeaways when using UberEats.

Those who sign up to the Welcome Pack will also receive a discount code for their first trip with Ola cabs in addition to 27x other goodies that'll be revealed throughout the summer.

How do I claim my pack?

All you need to do is head to and add your name, uni, year of study and email address. Not got your uni email account yet? No problem, you can use any personal email to sign up.

Packs will be sent out via email on the 20th August 2020.

We're all looking for constructive ways to spend our time during lockdown. This is why Paperclip has teamed up with two leading online learning platforms to offer our users a number of free online courses throughout April and May.

Many of our users have been wanting to use this period as an opportunity to find a new hobby or learn a new skill, and we're here to help...

What's new?

We've recently linked up with the online learning community Skillshare. The site offers thousands of courses focused on interaction rather than lecturing, with the primary goal of learning by completing a project. Skillshare has a diverse portfolio of courses including the creative arts, design, entrepreneurship, lifestyle and technology with many more subtopics to explore.

From this week and throughout the month of May, our users can enjoy two whole weeks of Skillshare absolutely free! Whether you want to improve your photography skills or have a go at some creative writing - you can do so without having to pay a penny.

With so many of us stuck at home with time on our hands, it appears that even formerly puzzle-averse people are discovering the hours-killing appeal of jigsaws!

In the UK, toy manufacturers are reporting 'huge increases in demand' for the traditional hobby since the Government urged the country to adopt self-isolation measures amid the coronavirus outbreak. In the United States, The Washington Post has described 'unprecedented interest' in the product, with both online retailers and brick-and-mortar stores now struggling to keep up with demand.

It's no surprise really that shoppers are now turning to second-hand marketplaces for their puzzle-fix. Since February, Paperclip has seen an almost 300% increase in searches for jigsaw puzzles with trades taking place all over the country.

Since the start of the month, we have seen a huge rise in searches for equipment for keeping fit during a lockdown. Searches for 'exercise bikes', 'dumbells' and 'yoga mats' have doubled throughout the first two weeks of March and continue to rise...


Another big mover in the Sports & Outdoors category! Bikes tend to be popular on our university marketplaces year round, but over the last three weeks we have seen searches for this product increase over 50% on our open marketplace.

It's quite common for us to see a greater demand for bikes when the weather warms up, but with all that's going on in the world right now, cycling is increasingly seen as a way to get out and stay active whilst practising social distancing.

We have hundreds of mountain bikes, road bikes, kids bikes and all the parts and accessories on our open marketplace - many with huge reductions from their RRP.

We also have a number of popular bike groups on our platform, here you can list and request items for sale and chat to your local trading community.

Hand sanitizer

No surprises here! With hand sanitizer stocks stripped from shelves in early-March, shoppers are turning to trusted online marketplaces.

Perhaps the most in-demand item in the world right now, the sky-rocketing demand for hand sanitizer gel has manufacturers working overtime.

Once abundant in chemists, supermarkets and corner shops - these small bottles of gel have proved elusive to most high street shoppers.

In the past few weeks, both distilleries and perfume factories in the UK and mainland Europe produce thousands of units for healthcare providers as well as the general public.

Since the start of the year, we have seen a ten-fold increase in searches for hand sanitizer and hundreds of users listing the product for sale. With prices as low as £1.00 per 30ml bottle, there are still bargains to be had!

Refreshers’ 2020 and beyond…

Team Paperclip has just returned from an extended tour across the UK, hitting up Refreshers' events from Sheffield to Surrey...

Last month we begun our journey, starting (as always) at Brunel University. This was the first stop on a thirty day adventure, onboarding students from over a dozen HE institutions onto their official campus marketplace.

After a hitting up Brunel, the team headed south to Exeter, where we made a huge splash at The Students' Guild Refreshers'. With a whole week of events for freshers to participate in, the team were able to engage with first year students, field questions about the new ExeChange marketplace and shower our new users with free goodies.

It wasn't just free sweets and choc' on offer this year. Users across all of our partner universities were taking advantage of a whole new set of exclusive deals and discounts. Students of all years were enjoying 50% off a National Express Coachcard, a huge discount off Domino's pizza as well as a free tastecard!

The start of the Spring term also gave us an opportunity to 'officially' launch both the Westminster and the LSE campus marketplaces. With both platforms connected to the other London universities we serve, students had hundreds of items ready to choose from and thousands of users ready to connect with from the minute they signed up.

After a couple of trips to the south coast promoting the Southampton and Solent marketplaces, we headed up to Yorkshire for our marquee event; Sheffield SU Refresher's event. With almost 5,000 students in attendance, the team went all out with on-the-day promotions, giveaways and sign-up rewards.

We concluded our Refresher's tour last Friday at the University of Surrey. Though the campus is one of the smallest we serve, we still managed to onboard a host of new users to and received some great feedback from students who were already making huge savings on their university essentials.

There wasn't anytime time to put our feet up as on Monday we were back on the road for our soft-launch of the new Warwick marketplace. Yet again the team came strapped with a huge bundle of free treats for students as we launched our campaign to integrate the new platform into daily student life.

This term we will be adding a whole new set of universities to our roster. At the time of publish, the Paperclip team are looking to launch another six universities before the Easter break! Not only this, but we will be adding even more exclusive student deals and discounts to our campus marketplaces.

Launching the LSESU marketplace

Happy new year to all our users and followers!

The new decade has only just begun and Paperclip are already rolling out new marketplaces for our university clients...

Back in late 2019, Paperclip began shortlisting a number of HE institutions to target as we look to increase our market share of universities in 2020. At the top of that list was the world-famous London School of Economics. After sitting down with the team at the Students' Union, plans were put in place to build a new trading platform for LSE students. Similar the one we created for their neighbours at KCL, the marketplace would allow LSE students to buy, sell and swap with one another quickly and easily, without any extra fees or charges.

Building LSESU marketplace...

The London School of Economics is located in Westminster, in the heart of the nation's capital. The Russell Group university, founded back in 1895, is considered one of the most prestigious in the UK. The university is also one of the most diverse, catering for students from over 150 different countries.

The LSE Students' Union has been providing support and representation for these students for over 100 years. Though LSESU is often highly commended for its commitment to improving life for students on campus, there hasn't been a dedicated online marketplace allowing students to buy and sell with one another.

After getting the green light from the SU team, our in-house Development team worked around the clock building their new platform. Much like our other uni marketplaces, students at LSE will also be able access exclusive deals and discounts at Domino's Pizza, National Express and more.

Whilst the Dev' were adding the finishing touches, the Marketing and Design teams began rolling out promotional material for social media and stall days on campus...

Within hours of launching, the LSESU marketplace had over 100 students sign-up to the new platform! Once on-boarded, users began listing new items, joining groups and taking advantage of the exclusive student deals.

Speaking about the launch, our Paperclip CEO and former LSE student Rich said, "I'm truly ecstatic that Paperclip is now powering a student marketplace at my alma mater, LSE! With such a concentrated population of highly motivated and entrepreneurial students, we're all excited about the value that can be crated both on and off campus."

Working closely with the SU, the Paperclip team will continue growing the marketplace's user base and adding more features throughout 2020...

Paperclip Year in Review: 2019

It's been another busy year for the team at Paperclip HQ! With new hires, a new office, new partnerships and a whole load of new marketplaces, it has been an exciting period of growth for the UK's leading marketplace provider. Check out our Year in Review blog and learn more about what we got up to in 2019...

New year, new faces...

With so many new university and corporate marketplaces going live during 2018, the Paperclip marketing team needed reinforcements. Step forward Tara, our new Marketing Coordinator! With a background in advertising and experience working at one of Bristol's top media agencies, we found the perfect person to help us grow our user base and create dynamic marketing campaigns.

Tara was soon joined by Lorenzo, Jess and Hannah; all of which who arrived courtesy of our internship programme. Working on content creation, copy writing, user growth and variety of different marketing campaigns, the internship programme helps 2nd and 3rd year students get real, hands-on experience in the sector whilst they work towards their degree qualification.

We also strengthened the Design team with Junior Designer Millie joining the ranks in September. After studying Graphic Communication at Plymouth University, Millie worked with our neighbours S3 Advertising before joining us on a full-time basis, just in time for our Freshers tour. During this period, Millie was joined by our new QA Manager Ivana, who is working remotely from Slovakia.

Relocating Paperclip HQ

After adding so many new faces to the team, we thought that Paperclip HQ deserved an upgrade...

Since 2016, Paperclip has been based in Cardiff's new One Central Square development. Starting off as part of Natwest's Accelerator programme, Paperclip found a perfect home in OCS and before long, we were powering the official One Central Square community marketplace!

Despite the office boasting some of the best facilities the city has to offer, the space just wasn't quite big enough to cater for our growing team.

After searching high and low for a new home, we found the perfect solution right under our nose (well, about 30 yards across the road...) Fortunately, a new space had recently become available at Millenium Plaza, our next door neighbour! With the same great location, more space and a great view of Cardiff city centre, it didn't take us long to set up shop in our new HQ.

Closing the investment round

Though it didn't take us long to find our perfect home, there wasn't much time for us to put our feet up. During the spring, Paperclip opened it's fourth round of investment. By May, we had secured funding from thirty new investors joined, ranging from doctors and fund managers to the co-founder and former CEO of Just-Eat, David Buttress.

We then embarked on our very first Seedrs campaign to top-up the existing round. We set a target of £300,000 and crossed our fingers...

After offering shares to our users, we opened up the campaign and promoted it tirelessly through our blogger network and on social media. By the end of the campaign we had raised a huge £420,000! With individuals from the USA to Qatar choosing to get involved, Paperclip now boasts a diverse group of investors with industry experience from all over the world!

Prior to launching our Seedrs campaign, we rolled out Version 3 of the Paperclip app!

In response to the user feedback we collected during the first half of the year, our Development team set about making a slicker, easy to use platform with our user's needs at the forefront.

We merged messages and notifications under one icon for a cleaner and clearer user experience as well as sprucing up our buying and selling icons. We also added listings into a chat where you can remind your buyer/seller what item you are discussing on your messaging thread or provide further photos or item info if needed.

New uni marketplaces

We left 2018, with only a dozen university marketplaces live. By the end of the year, we had more than doubled that number. Once word began spreading of our success at Oxford, Cambridge and UCL to name but a few, more and more Student Unions reached out for us to build them their very own campus marketplace.

Joining the party this summer were Surrey and Greenwich University from the capital as well as The Students Guild in Exeter, Devon. We also took on Solent University, who will be linking up with our existing Southampton Uni marketplace, as well as Brighton University on the south coast.

After a successful Freshers period in September, we were able to double our total number of university marketplace users in little over a month. We further expanded our fleet with Westminster, Cardiff and Leeds Trinity all joining at the tail end of the year.

Schools and more...

During 2019, Paperclip also soft-launched our School marketplaces. In response to a number of requests from parents of school-age children, we created a new platform enabling school parents to buy and sell items for themselves or their children in a safe environment. With parents on average spending £250 on uniform, classroom equipment and PE kit for each of their children, there was definitely room to make back to school shopping easier on the wallet.

Since our launch, dozens of schools marketplaces have been set up are parents across the UK are already using Paperclip to help them save money and find a home for items outgrown by their children.

This autumn we also worked with eToro to launch GoodMarket - an enterprise marketplace allowing for staff at their head office in Israel to buy, sell and swap together.

The platform utilises GoodDollar to explore different ways we can reduce global wealth inequality using blockchain technology. GoodDollar plans to build a new open-source cryptocurrency to distribute money using the principles of UBI (universal basic income). The new marketplace lets users redeem their UBI credits (GoodDollars) in exchange for goods and services. 

New partnerships!

During the course of the year, we partnered with a number of brands to provide our student users with exclusive deals and discounts year round. Our partnership with StudentBeans has allowed us to offer students money off Pizza Express, Farah and more!

During the first term of the 2019/20 academic year, we also linked up with online fast-fashion retailer Rebellious to give our users further discount on sale items. We also provided students with a free Greedy Llama vegan box, a free tastecard and a National Express discount which allowed students to travel home for Christmas at a fraction of the normal price.

Giving a little back...

Here at Paperclip, we are always looking for new ways to reward our loyal users. Not only have we set about finding awesome deals and discounts for our student users, but we have also given away over 200 items completely free!

To top this off, Paperclip has been working closely with Keele SU and USW Students' Union to deliver lectures and seminars from our department heads and other entrepreneurs.

The team has also set up a partnership with the Swansea University Conservation and Ecology Society. Here Paperclip will help SUCES promote and grow their society and will be sponsoring a number of society memberships as part of our commitment to sustainability for 2020.

2020 and beyond...

Without giving too much away, we plan on making 2020 a big one.

We plan to build on our success in 2019 and capture a 70% market share of UK universities whilst growing our user base and adding more exciting deals and discounts for students.

We also have a number of platform enhancements planned, with a soon-to-be-released payment gateway on the horizon. 2020 will also be the year our university marketplace users will be able to access local lettings and jobs on their platforms.

Not only this, but we will shortly be announcing a number of new commercial partnerships as well as our long-awaited expansion overseas...

The squad at Paperclip HQ are excited to announce that we will be partnering with the Swansea University Conservation and Ecology Society for the 2020 Spring term.

Expanding the Swansea SoM marketplace

Back in 2016, we launched a test marketplace for students studying at Swansea University's School of Management. The platform started life as a final year project for a group of undergrad Business and Management students. Little did we know, the user base would continue to grow organically as more and more Swansea SoM students began trading their old books, clothes and uni essentials on campus.

Three years later, we reached out the team at Swansea Students' Union with a expansion strategy that would include a re-brand and a roll out to all students currently enrolled at the university. Within a few weeks, the old marketplace had levelled-up and almost 1,000 students had been onboarded to their new trading platform.

Linking up with the Conservation Soc'

As a thank you to the Students' Union for letting us expand the platform further, we set aside some of the revenue generated from the marketplace in order to sponsor a student society.

As sustainability and environmental protection has never been so important, we decided to speak with the head of the Conservation and Ecology Society (SUCES) in order to create a formal partnership.

Speaking about the good work the society does on and off campus, Secretary Maria Oliviera said, "The society offers a wide range of volunteering events, photography competitions, study sessions, socials, workshop, lecturers as well as charity fundraising opportunities and collaborations with other societies. We organise our own events for members we work closely with other groups such as Swansea Uni’s Biosciences Department and Sustainability Team to promote environmental awareness."

After explaining how our campus marketplaces have already helped thousands of UK students reduce waste on campus by buying second hand, we decided explore partnership options.

A helping hand for sustainable students...

As of 2020, Paperclip will be sponsoring a number of memberships for the
Conservation and Ecology Society. This means that students who may be struggling financially can now join the society and attend these great events, without having to worry about the joining fee.

We will also be helping the society with paid social campaigns and promotion on campus.

With our values aligning so closely, and off the back of our success working with some of the greenest universities in the country, this partnership seems like a match made in heaven.

Say hello to GoodMarket!

The team at Paperclip HQ have spent the last few months hard at work on an exciting new partnership...

As of this month, Paperclip will provide eToro's head office in Israel with an enterprise marketplace, for staff to buy, sell and swap together!

But there's much more to this project than just an internal marketplace, the new platform is part of a wider partnership with GoodDollar, an initiative backed by some of the biggest names in tech; including Elon Musk. GoodDollar is a universal basic income (UBI) project to help reduce income inequality around the world.

A little about GoodDollar...

With wealth inequality rising and future challenges such as automation on the horizon, concerned organisations and individuals are working together to mitigate the impact of these changes.

GoodDollar is a series of tests exploring different ways we can reduce global wealth inequality using blockchain technology. In time, GoodDollar plans to build a new open-source cryptocurrency to distribute money using the principles of universal basic income.

GoodDollar describes itself as a not-for-profit project 'nurturing an ecosystem of academics, NGOs, ethical investors, crypto supporters, and anyone who cares about reducing inequality'.

GoodMarket is a new marketplace where one can redeem their UBI credits (GoodDollars) in exchange for goods and services. Since our soft-launch earlier this week, dozens of early adopters filling up the marketplace with clothes, gadgets, kid's toys and more...

Rest assured, the new GoodMarkert users will still be able to create their own trading groups, part-exchange items and enjoy all the features of our existing public marketplaces.

This new platform can be accessed anytime on both mobile and desktop browser.

Following a successful trial phase, Paperclip will roll out similar marketplaces around the world...

Speaking about the new marketplace launch, our CEO Rich said, "We're incredibly excited to work with GoodDollar and eToro on this project, and all of the potential that a universal basic income might bring for those that need it most around the world."

Paperclip join the Rebellion!

Paperclip are delighted to announce our new partnership with online retailer Rebellious Fashion, providing our student users with yet another exclusive discount!

On top of the generous reductions on the Rebellious Fashion website, our university marketplace users can now access an extra 12% off all online purchases.

Our journey with Rebellious
